Miss Mary Millicent Rust, 89, Washington Rt. 4, Portersville Road, died in the Extended Care Unit of Daviess County Hospital Tuesday, February 7, 1995, at 1:30 p.m. She was born July 12, 1905 in Jackson County to James William and Eunice Rhoades Rust.

The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday at Gill Chapel with Bro. Byrun Black officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

She was a retired school teacher teaching 38 years in English, Latin and journalism. She was educated at Longfellow Elementary School, was a 1924 graduate of Washington High School, received a B.A. degree from Butler University in 1927, and M.A. degree from the University of Michigan in 1944. She taught school two years at Oceanside, Calif. and the last 17 1/2 years in Washington High School retiring in 1969.

She was a member of the local, state and national Retired Teachers Associations, and was awarded Daviess County and District 1960 Teacher of the Year. She was awarded faculty life membership in Quill and Scroll International Honor Society for high school journalists. She was a member of the Daviess County Board of Directors over 20 years and chairman of Daviess County Red Cross Youth for 29 years, also a faculty member of Eastern Area Red Cross Youth Leadership Training Center in Ohio for 10 years. She was a teacher-sponsor of Red Cross Youth at Hagertown High School, Wayne County and conducted Leadership Training Center there, as well as for Daviess County Schools and was recognized at state and national conventions for volunteer work with Red Cross.

In 1980 she was presented with an engraved plaque by the Washington Catholic Key Club for "Outstanding Service to the youth of Washington, Indiana." She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Delta Chapter, International Honor Society for women educators since 1953, serving as publicity chairman for the tri-county organization for 24 years and on the state committee for two years. She was a member of the Daviess County Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society and was presented life membership in 1978, also the Key to the City of Washington from Mayor Leo Sullivan for outstanding service to the community in 1980.

She was a charter and life member of the Daviess County Historical Society and was one of the first four recipients of the Joseph Harrison Daviess certificate award for service and leadership to the society for which a silver maple tree was planted on the museum ground. She was a member of Omega Alpha Chi, one of the founders and committee member of the society's student loan fund since 1954. She was a member of the Classical Club since 1953, Eastern Star No. 210 and First Christian Church.

Surviving are one nephew, Robert R. Rust, Indianapolis, two great nephews and one great great niece. Two brothers, James and John Rust have died.
