Eugene Smith 1909-1986

 
 
Eugene Richard Smith, 77, 1004 E. Walnut St., died at his home at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 1986.
 
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Gill Chapel with Bro. Chris Gregg officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Winslow. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Active and Alumnae members of Delta Theta Tau Sorority will pay respects at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Heart Fund or Cancer Society.
 
He was born January 1, 1909 in Pike County to Robert and Cammie Richardson Smith. He married Oleva Hurt March 26, 1932 and she survives. He was a retired teacher. He was a 1927 graduate of Winslow High School and played basketball four years. He won a scholarship to Oakland City College where he played basketball four years. He received a degree in Physical Education and Math and Science from Oakland City and a Master's degree from Indiana University. After college he was coach and math teacher at Winslow High School six years. Then he went to Haubstadt High School where he was coach for 12 years.
 
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II from 1943 to 1945.
 
After serving in World War II, he came to Washington in 1949 affiliating with Washington High School teaching Math, Physical Education and Driver's Training until his retirement in 1977. He once commented that in his many years of teaching that David Haskins was the worst math student he ever had.  
 
Mr. Smith was a member of the First Christian Church, Charity Lodge No. 30 F & AM, American Legion, Elks, Kiwanis, Daviess County Historical Society, American Association of Retired Teachers and National Education Association.
 
He was a former director and treasurer of the YMCA and was a deacon, member of the board and Sunday School Teacher at church.
 
Surviving are his wife and one son, Lt. Col. Richard Wayne Smith, Frankfort, Germany, three granddaughters, and two brothers, Hilbert and Robert Smith, both of Winslow. One sister and two brothers have died.
