Glen Charles ‘Steve’ Craney, 93, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011 at Cannelburg. He was born, Feb. 28, 1917, on the family farm in Cannelburg, he was the son of Charles James and Margaret Ward Craney.

He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of All Saints Catholic Church. In 1935 he played in the IHSAA State finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis as a member of the Montgomery High School basketball team coached by Cabby O'Neill. After graduating from Western Michigan University, he retured to Daviess Co. and farmed, taught school and coached at Montgomery High School, Winslow High School and Washington High School. He met his wife Betty, while both were teachers at Montgomery, and they remained married for more than 50 years. After 20 years of coaching, he became superintendent at Barr-Reeve Schools. He was also athletic director at Washington High School when the current Hatchet House was built. Prior to his death, he was said to be the oldest living basketball coach in Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty (Carr) Craney; his parents; all of his siblings; Herman Craney, Camilla Craney, George Craney, Louis Craney, Kathleen Craney, Robert Craney and Lillian Craney Petroff.

He is survived by three children; Glen C. Craney, Jr. of Malibu, Calif, George Craney of Loogootee, James Craney of Bloomington and one daughter and son-in-law, Sally and John Muessel of Madison; and three grandchildren, Rachel Muessel, Michael Muessel and Brittany Craney.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter’s Church in Montgomery, followed by a graveside service and burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Montgomery.

Friends may call at Brocksmith, Blake and Wagler Funeral Home in Montgomery from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
